Student Success Plans

The Student Success Plan

At John Winthrop Middle School, we have a plan in place for the success of all students aptly named “The JW Student Success Plan”. This Student Success Plan covers the two years our students are at JWMS and focuses on three main areas: academics, social interactions, and career goals.

The SSP begins in 6th grade and goes right up through high school graduation. Seventh graders are familiar with the term Student Success Plan from last year as they entered goals into an online program called Naviance. 8th graders also set goals last year and used Naviance here at JW.

To make the SSP work for everyone, students participate by setting goals and making plans to achieve these goals.

During our ACT (Advisory Connection Team) lessons, students learn about the process for setting academic and social SMART goals. They are reviewed and revised at regular intervals throughout the year. Examples of academic goals might include improving a grade to a specific number or increasing homework completion. Social goals might be participating in more activities, engaging in successful conflict resolution or having more positive personal interactions. Once students decide on their goals, they create an action plan to achieve the objective.

Remember, a goal without a plan is just a wish.

After creating goals and plans, students enter their work into Naviance, our online program. Naviance is accessible to parents and is used more often when students enter high school and begin to seriously plan for college and career. We encourage parents to view these goals and plans and discuss them at home. This strengthens the process and helps the student advance their plan.
