In the month of November, the students have been studying Greek mythology and modern stories. For much of the month, the students worked on analyzing characters in Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters. They were asked to determine whether Percy Jackson is a better example of a modern hero or classic hero. This culminated in the creation of an online presentation that explained the students' analysis of the character. This study corresponds to the Common Core State Standards in multiple areas, including analyzing dialogue and events as they reveal characters, choosing support to defend a position, and analyzing multiple texts.
When the students return from Thanksgiving, the students will be studying Greek and Latin roots. This unit will ask the students to study words and their parts, including creating a project that explains the concept of affixes and roots. In the end, the students will be able to comprehend more words based on their initial interaction with a word because of their understanding of word parts.
